Now that the weather’s finally warming up, it’s the perfect time to exercise in the open air.
Rising temperatures and later sunsets are the perfect ingredients for outdoor workouts. Talk about that serotonin boost, amiright? That’s why we’ve compiled a list of local outdoor fitness classes — ranging from boot camp to yoga — to help you pack your spring and summer with group workouts. barre3 Blue Bell
Mark your calendars: barre3’s Blue Bell location is bringing back its Breathe and Brunch summer series this August. The classes, which occur every Sunday in August, will take place in the Grand Garden at Normandy Farms. More details coming soon, so keep an eye on their Instagram.
barre3 Cherry Hill
For those over the bridge, barre3 Cherry Hill is also running outdoor barre classes. Theirs will happen at the vista deck in Cooper River Park every Wednesday at 6 pm starting June 1st and ending September 28th. Free to attend. For upcoming info, check their Instagram.
Starting May 10th, barre3 Rittenhouse will host a 10-week class series at Commerce Square (20th and Market streets). Each workout is free to attend and begins at 5:30 pm
Benny Bridge Crew
This running group meets at the east side of City Hall at 6:05 am every Monday morning, rain or shine, for a run across the Benjamin Franklin Bridge. It’s free with no sign-up necessary (though, proof of vax is required). Follow their Instagram for the latest.
Body Rock Bootcamp
This West Philly gym offers near-daily ways to exercise outside. At the Schuylkill Banks under the Walnut Street bridge, there’s outdoor boot camp on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays at 6 am, as well as on Mondays and Thursdays at 7 pm Check the schedule for registration information and for the latest on the classes.
BPM is currently planning three outdoor fitness events for the summer — one in June, July, and August. Dates and details are still TBD (though, we did hear the classes will likely occur on Thursdays at 5:30 p.m.), so keep an eye on their Instagram for upcoming announcements.
Center City Fit at Dilworth Park
All-levels fitness classes have returned to Dilworth Park, thanks to presenting sponsor Rothman Orthopaedics. Expect a rotation of Zumba and cardio boxing led by instructors from Optimal Sport 1315 Walnut. The 60-minute classes take place weekly on Mondays and Tuesdays at 6 pm, through the end of May. No pre-registration is required; see the schedule for the latest information.
There’s no designated class leader at this roving pop-up fitness class. Instead, different members lead the class each week, allowing for plenty of variety in the types of workouts. Classes occur at different outdoor spaces throughout the city on Thursdays at 6:45 am (They also host “Sunday Runday” every week at 8:30 am) Locations, which in the past have included the Rail Park and Jefferson Square Park, are announced on Instagram a few days prior.
This fitness group offers outdoor boot camp classes on the Art Museum steps on multiple mornings throughout the week. Workouts consist of bodyweight exercises like squats, plans and push-ups, in addition to challenges that make use of the surrounding area. Check the schedule for dates and times, plus how to sign up.
In addition to indoor and virtual classes, DanceFit hosts an outdoor workout, HipFit, on Monday nights at 6 pm The class takes place in the parking lot of Spa Elysium in Chestnut Hill. Sign up here.
Along with indoor workouts at its Brewerytown gym, Fit Academy is running outdoor boot camps down at The Navy Yard this season. Workouts take place every Tuesday and Thursday at 5 pm, and are free for Fit Academy members and employees of The Navy Yard. Find the schedule and book your spot here.
Manayunk-based Goals Fit offers indoor and live-streamed workouts, but they also run outdoor boot camps throughout the week near the studio, as well as at the tracks at Roxborough High School and Plymouth Whitemarsh High School. See the schedule and sign up here.
Hike + Heal
Hike + Heal is a local collective for women and woman-identifying individuals meant to support overall wellness. The group offers monthly hiking opportunities on Philly-area trails. With Homewerk Fitness, enjoy a 60-minute strength training every Saturday at 10 am Classes usually take place by the Art Museum or in Maja Park. Register for class here.
This South Philly gym is bringing its yoga classes back to the breezy rooftop at Bok. The 60-minute classes take place at 6 pm on the second and fourth Tuesdays of the month, end of April through October. Plus, each flow supports a different local nonprofit. Lumos Yoga & Barre
For a third year, Lumos Yoga & Barre has brought back all-levels outdoor yoga classes at Corinthian Gardens, right next to the Eastern State Penitentiary. Practice runs 6 to 7 pm on Tuesdays and 10:15 to 11:15 am on Sundays. More info and registration how-to here.
This Rittenhouse-based studio is bringing their yoga classes to Cira Green this season. The outdoor sessions take place every Sunday at 10 am, are good for all-levels, and run for 60 minutes. Pre-registration is required and can be done here.
This season, Monarch Yoga is running three roof-deck power flows every week, as well as “Yoga Beats” in Kensington-based community garden Sunflower Philly twice per week (one of which is always accompanied by a live DJ!). Peep the class schedule here.
Every month, Mural Miles leads free group runs that highlight Philly’s amazing street art. Expect to run about five miles, and see five or six murals along the way. Follow Mural Miles’ Instagram for upcoming location and date details.
Never Give Up Training
Manayunk’s Never Give Up is hosting its signature NGU50 — a half-strength, half-cardio workout — outdoors this spring and summer. Classes happen at 5:30 pm on Wednesdays and 8:30 am on Saturdays near the studio (meet at the studio about 10 minutes before class). Owner Ali Cook Jackson says more outdoor sessions will be added to the schedule as the season continues. Sign up here.
November Project Philadelphia
This volunteer-run, 6:25 a.m. morning workout consists of running-based circuit training and bodyweight exercises. Classes are free and take place on Wednesdays at the Art Museum steps and at a rotating outdoor location on Fridays. Follow on Instagram for the latest updates and class location information.
OMM Yoga offers 50-minute flows on Mondays at 10 am and Tuesdays at 6 pm All classes will take place at the Schuylkill River Trail (behind CHOP Plaza near the South Street bridge). In the summer, OMM typically runs yoga down in Ventnor, as well. Find the current schedule here.
Philadelphia School of Circus Arts
Go next level with your fitness and try an outdoor flying trapeze class, thanks to the Philadelphia School of Circus Arts in Mount Airy. Go for a one- or two-hour lesson the first weekend of May to celebrate the grand reopening. After that, lessons will be every Thursday and Friday (4 to 6 pm and 6:30 to 8:30 pm), and Saturday and Sunday (10 am to noon, 12:30 to 2:30 pm, and 3 to 5 pm ). The local acrobatics brand is planning to run “Anti-Gravity Jams” every month starting this May. These outdoor events will teach people skills in acrobatics, aerial, pole dancing, and high-lining (executing movement about 30 feet above ground). The first one is happening on Sunday, May 15th from 2 to 7 pm at Glendinning Rock Garden, with more TBA on Instagram. Philly Acro will also host acro-only outdoor events — one is scheduled for Sunday, May 22nd at Independence Mall.
Philly Dance and Fitness
Philly Dance and Fitness is run by Philly-based instructors teaching 305 Fitness, the booming dance cardio workout. The group is hosting a number of pop-up outdoor classes in May, including ones at Cira Green and Drexel Square. They intend to continue throughout the summer with details TBD, so stay tuned via Instagram.
Philly Girls Who Walk
This just-launched walking group is for women and woman-identifying individuals who are looking to get outside and meet new people. The first walk is scheduled for May 12th at 6:30 pm and will happen on a weekly basis. For the first one, meet behind the Art Museum (and feel free to bring your dog). As part of its summer series, Remix Fitness is planning to run outdoor workouts at both their Horsham and Plymouth Meeting locations. Enjoy an open-air spin class on Saturdays in Plymouth Meeting or Sundays in Horsham — both at 9:30 am On Wednesday nights in Plymouth Meeting, Remix Fitness will offer rotating low-impact classes, like Remix Flex, Remix Barre, and Remix Sculpt . These classes will begin after Memorial Day, with possible outdoor pop-ups before then. Stay up-to-date by checking their Instagram.
Stonewall Sports Philly
In addition to rec sports leagues (outdoor kickball!!), Stonewall Sports Philly hosts outdoor yoga classes and a running group, both typically on Saturday mornings. Check their yoga class schedule and running group schedule for the latest.
Strength House Fitness
Strength Haüs’ kettlebell workouts take place at different outdoor spaces throughout Philly on Sundays. Classes are free (but donations are accepted) and focused on strength training for all levels. DM Strength Haüs on Instagram to get added to their email list, which is the key to finding out the location and time for that week’s workout.
Tailored Training Narberth
This Narberth studio holds Saturday morning classes in Sabine Park. The all-level classes are personal training-inspired and combine strength and cardio exercises. The workout begins at 9 am and lasts an hour. Registration information is available online.
Tuck Barre and Yoga
Tuck Barre and Yoga offers plenty of opportunities to enjoy an outdoor workout. Daily barre, yoga, and bounce classes are held at Smith School Apartment’s rooftop, and you can register for any of those here. Tuck also hosts free outdoor barre every Tuesday at 5:30 pm at Drexel Square, the big grassy park at Schuylkill Yards — sign up here.
This yoga studio — with locations in Manayunk and Chestnut Hill — recently brought back outdoor classes. This year, you can enjoy your practice on the footbridge in Manayunk (intersection of Dupont and Baker streets) Tuesdays at 5:30 pm and Fridays at 7:30 pm through the end of September. Yoga at Bolton Mansion
Bolton Mansion in Levittown hosts outdoor yoga classes every Wednesday through May 25th, weather permitting. The 60-minute Vinyasa flow is suitable for all levels, and begins at 6 pm More info can be found here.
Yoga at Schuylkill Banks
The favorite warm-weather tradition that is yoga at Schuylkill Banks by the Walnut Street bridge has returned. These donation-based classes occur at 6 pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays, as well as at 10 am on Saturdays and Sundays. Register for a class here.
Conshohoken studio Yoga Home is kicking off outdoor classes on May 4th. Get your flow on at 6 pm on Wednesdays at the AA Garthwaite Stadium and at 9 am on Saturdays at Sutcliffe Park. Visit their website to sign up.
