According to ancient Roman physicians, breast cancer was healed by rubbing on cabbage paste. This procedure was formerly folklore by contemporary scientists but not anymore. “Studies have shown that rubbing cabbage paste on the backs of laboratory animals may prevent the growth of tumours,” says Jon Michnovicz, head of the Foundation for Preventive Oncology in New York.
The greatest approach to absorb cabbage’s therapeutic powers is to consume it. Bok Choy is a powerful cancer fighter. It also includes nutrients that may help prevent heart disease, birth deformities, digestive issues, and cataracts. One research revealed that consuming four cruciferous veggies each week lowered the chance of death by 26 percent. The chemical is an antiestrogen, removing toxic estrogens associated with breast cancer. “We knew that giving women pure I3C would work,” says Dr. Michnovicz. To have the same effect, most people consume cabbage or another cruciferous vegetable like broccoli. Sulforaphane, another cabbage component, protects against breast cancer by blocking carcinogens and repairing DNA.
Polish women consume three times as much cabbage as Americans — 30 pounds per year against 10 pounds. They used to consume more raw, sauerkraut, and short-cooked cabbage as a side dish rather than boiled or slow-cooked. Compounds in cruciferous vegetables protect against lung cancer. A study of Chinese women in Singapore revealed that eating cruciferous vegetables lowered their risk of lung cancer by 30%. Carnivores lowered their risk of lung cancer by 69%!
How to contain the odor of the cabbage?
Cabbage helps prevent prostate cancer. Men who ate three or more servings of cruciferous vegetables per week reduced their risk of prostate cancer by 44%, according to a Seattle-based research. It is also considered as a cook’s best buddy. It’s versatile, cheap, and easy to prepare. The only issue is the odor. However, there is a solution for it as well. When cooking cabbage, add a celery stalk or a full English walnut (in the shell). This will mask the odor or you can also cook the cabbage in a wok or pan instead of boiling it for a lengthy period.
Experts advise eating raw cabbage to maintain the healthy components. Sautéing cabbage for 5 minutes or less retains the phytonutrients and maximizes their availability. Microwaving cabbage reduces sulforaphane content. Don’t boil cabbage either. One research showed 90% of glucosinolates in the cooking water. (Glucosinolates become isothiocyanates, including sulforaphane.) Buying half or shredded cabbage soon loses its vitamin C value. When you reach home, put the cabbage in the fridge (in a plastic bag). Slice or chop cabbage and let it rest for 5–10 minutes before cooking to maximise glucosinolate production.
Helps to fight some of the deadliest diseases
You’ve read about antioxidants like vitamin C, E, and beta-carotene. In addition to safeguarding you they fight free radicals which harm healthy cells and cause heart disease, cancer and other dangerous problems. These chemicals are abundant in cruciferous plants. A half-cup of red cabbage has more antioxidants than a cup of green tea, according to researchers. Bok choy and savoy are great providers of beta-carotene, a vitamin lacking in other cabbages. Beta-carotene levels in the blood are linked to less heart attacks, cancers, and cataracts.
These cabbages are also high in vitamin C, which has been shown to decrease blood pressure and heart disease. Raw Bok choy contains 16 milligrams of vitamin C, whereas raw savoy cabbage gives 11 milligrams, or 18 percent of the DV. These same cabbages are good providers of folate. Half-cup of either provides 35 milligrams, or 9% of the DV. Folate is required for appropriate tissue development. Folate has been shown to protect against cancer, heart disease, and birth abnormalities. Women, particularly those on birth control tablets, are at risk for folate insufficiency.
