The Royal Family’s go to beauty tips and tricks and how you can do the same

Nobody in this world is perfect but, let’s be honest, the women of the British Royal Family always look pretty flawless. When we see pictures of the likes of Kate Middleton or Meghan Markle many of us stop and think: ‘Wow – they look beautiful’.

In order to look this good all the time the ladies seem to rely on their own beauty knowledge, as well as placing a lot of trust in their personal makeup artists. It must be hard to be expected to look perfect all the time for every single public appearance, but they manage to pull it off with grace.

Luckily some of their tips and tricks have been revealed over the years, so we’ve rounded up some of the best beauty hacks the royals use to ensure they’re always at the best they can be. Here are just some tips that could help you to get that special royal glow (you’ll just have to cope without the tiara!)

1. The three-step trick to picture-perfect eyes

Prince William marries Kate Middleton

It’s been widely reported that the Duchess of Cambridge applied her own wedding day makeup, and why wouldn’t you? You’d really want to make those final touches on the most special day of your life.

Apparently she had some professional assistance on hand in the form of Bobbi Brown pro, Hannah Martin. It was said the secret to her natural-looking eyes was a three-step trick she used by applying three different shades of eyeshadow.

According to Town and Country Magazine, she applied Ivory all over the eyelid, followed by Rockstar on the lower lid and then used a touch of Slate in the crease before blending. The shades may have changed since then, but you can find Bobbi Brown eyeshadows on their website or at John Lewis.

2. Meghan loves popular favorites

It looks as though Meghan Markle has picked up a few tips and tricks from her makeup artists over the years when she’s been on set, as she’s named some popular favorites as her must-have products over the years.

One of them was NARS Blush in Orgasm, and she even called it as one of her top five beauty items that she simply can’t live without in an interview with Beauty Banter. She told Beauty Banter the product offers “a perfect rosy flush tone that brightens the face.”

You can get the blush at NARS or at John Lewis.

3. Not to mention, keep your face moving

Never mind the gym – if you want the Markle glow, maybe the secret is trying to smile a little more! Back in 2014 Meghan told Birchbox : “I do facial exercises from one of my favorite aestheticians, Nicola Joss, who basically has you sculpt your face from the inside out.

“I swear it works, as silly as you may feel. On the days I do it, my cheekbones and jawline are way more sculpted.”

4. The key to irresistible lips

If you’re wondering what Meghan keeps in her handbag, one item is probably the Fresh Sugar Advanced Therapy Lip Treatment with SPF 15.

“I have searched high and low and tried every kind of lip balm but this is the very best,” she once told Beauty Banter. “Soft, kissable, buttery lips. I wear by it.”

5. Don’t be afraid to top up your makeup on the go

Let’s be honest – we never see the Royals looking a little worse for wear – not even pictured on the doorstep or when they’re doing the school run. Maybe this is because being in a rush is no excuse for them not to look immaculate.

Back in 2016, Princess Eugenie told Harper’s Bazaar: “I do my makeup in the car. I’m really good at doing it on the move.

“I use Charlotte Tilbury and Bobbi Brown – Charlotte’s mascara and Bobbi Brown bronzer. They are geniuses.”

6. Always opt for a neutral nail

What’s the best beauty secret of all? Well, many would say to keep it simple, and that’s exactly what the Duchess of Cambridge seems to do when it comes to nails.

It’s been reported that since as far back as the 80s Queen Elizabeth has worn Essie’s sheer pink hue Ballet Slippers, and many of the royal ladies have gone down a similar route. On her wedding day Kate Middleton went for a mixture of two (since discontinued) neutral tones.

Her manicurist previously revealed to the Daily Mail that the products she used were Laque Ultra Shine in Rose Lounge Bourjois and Essie’s Allure.

7. It’s all about balance

Princess Diana always looked incredible, and it’s been reported that she always followed strict rules when it came to her beauty routine. Her makeup artist Mary Greenwell revealed some of her styling secrets back in 2012, and said the key was always about restraint.

She told Stylist : “You can combine full lips with a heavy eye – the trick is to wear a light blush. You just do two elements and not three. You never, ever do a full lip, eye, and blush!”

Wise words, indeed.

8. Make sure you brighten up your eyes

The Duchess of Sussex has had many early mornings over the years, from rushing to film sets to preparing for public engagements. She previously shared a trick she picked up back on her days filming for Suits, and says it really helps her to look more awake in the mornings.

She once told Birchbox : “To open up your eyes, apply a highlighter like Yves Saint Laurent’s Touche Éclat in the inner corner. This trick is especially good when we are filming at 3am, and I need to look bright eyed and bushy tailed.”

9. Gel liner is key to a great smokey eye

The Duchess of Cambridge has been long-known to use Bobbi Brown’s Long-Wear Gel Eyeliner in Black Ink. The product is great for creating the perfect smoldering effect when opting for a smokey eye.

Just be careful not to spread it too near the tops of your eyelids. The product can be found at Bobbi Brown or at John Lewis.

10. Ditch the false lashes for a natural look

Let’s be honest, nobody ever looks at the royals and thinks their look is too much – maybe that’s because they stay away from falsies. Meghan’s lashes always look amazing, without the need to add any false products into the mix.

Back in 2014, she told Allure : “My favorite mascara is Diorshow Iconic. I also use Revitalash on my eyelashes, and I swear they are as long as they ever could be.”

11. Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize!

It’s well-known that Elizabeth Arden holds a Royal Warrant as Manufacturers of Cosmetics by appointment to Her Majesty. Even though the palace has never exposed the exact products the Queen uses, it’s said the warranties does shine a light on the brand’s Eight Hour moisturizers.

In the past, it’s been reported the products have been dubbed as “iconic.”

12. Be picky with your eyeliner

It’s reported in the beauty circles that Princess Diana was initially a fan of using blue pencils to highlight the eyes, but Greenwell is said to have guided her away from this over time.

The makeup artist advised her to opt for softer beige and brown eyeliners when she met with her at a photoshoot for Vogue in 1991. “The thing that I changed most about Princess Diana’s look was actually moving away from the blue liner, which was very aging for her,” Greenwell told the Daily Mail.

13. Never underestimate the importance of a good wash!

It may sound silly, but making sure you cleanse is really one of the most important things you can do to maintain healthy skin. In a previous interview with Harper’s Bazaar, Princess Eugenie revealed she loves Jo Malone’s Eucalyptus and Mint Cleanser and would use it every night before she went to bed.

The product has since been discontinued, but there are various other cleansing products you could sample. When it comes to skincare one of the most important things you can do is cleanse regularly to keep the skin healthy.

If you’re looking for a recommendation Liz Earle’s Cleanse & Polish Hot Cloth Cleanser is currently one of the most popular products of its kind in the UK. You can find it at Liz Earle or John Lewis.
