NEWTON, MA — The City of Newton is beginning its search for a new fire chief as current Fire Chief and Emergency Management Director Gino Lucchetti prepares to retire from his 45 year career.
Mayor Ruthanne Fuller said she has been working with Human Resources Director Michelle Pizzi O’Brien on a comprehensive recruitment process. Together, they have developed a Fire Chief Candidate Brochure and Profile for any internal and external candidates interested in the position.
“My goal is to identify a candidate with exceptional integrity and demonstrated leadership, effective management capacity, and excellent interpersonal skills,” said Fuller in a statement Thursday. “Our next Chief will lead this outstanding and stable department and its dedicated members who are committed to serving and protecting, without prejudice or favoritism, the lives and property of the residents and businesses of Newton from both natural and man-made disasters.”
“The next Chief must ensure high quality fire suppression, fire prevention, emergency management and EMS services here in Newton,” she continued. “The Chief will focus on continued, deliberate, mission-driven improvement of the Department with an eye toward 21st Century concepts of fire service and public safety; community engagement; and creating and impacting the Department culture in a positive and inclusive way.”
The recruitment brochure and opportunity will be shared with the International Association of Fire Chiefs, the Fire Chiefs Association of Massachusetts, the Massachusetts Municipal Association, the International EMS & Firefighters Pride Alliance, the National Association of Hispanic Firefighters, the International Association of Women in Fire & Emergency Services, the International Association of Black Professional Firefighters, the Black Chief Officers Committee, and more.
The city has also hired MMA Consulting Group to design and administer an assessment process of candidates. The company will work with the mayor to select a panel of experienced assessors and develop exercises meant to ensure the new Fire Chief meets the core competencies and personal characteristics needed for the position.
In addition to the assessment process, Fuller will also develop a series of interview teams. This will include people from city departments that work closely with the Newton Fire Department, residents, a City Councilor ,and other experienced fire service members and public administrators.
Applications for the Newton Fire Chief position are due by Monday, April 4.
