October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and Elizabeth Wende Breast Care, LLC has planned a number of events to raise awareness throughout the community.

The “2008 Lights of Courage” will be displayed at the Elizabeth Wende Breast Care building in Brighton.  The pink lights displayed at EWBC in October signify and express the respect and admiration we have for each patient diagnosed with breast cancer.  Our hope is that the lights will serve as an inspiration to all women who have been recently diagnosed with breast cancer, as reassurance that they are not alone, that there is support for them and that there are continued advances in medical treatments for breast cancer.

An educational presentation for the public will be held at EWBC. Learn the facts about screening for breast and bone disease, new medical techniques and tips on healthy habits you can easily work into your busy life. A professional education presentation for radiologic technologists entitled “MRI and Emerging Technologies in Breast Imaging” will be presented.  ASRT Category A/A+ credits provided. October 7. Hearing Loss Association/Rochester chapter meeting. 11 AM - “Our returning war vets: Do they get what they need?” Nelson Peck, associated with the Canandaigua VA Medical Center, discusses needs of demobilized service personnel and comments on services at the local Veterans’ Outreach Center, which provides counseling, housing, outreach, and education. 7 PM. Two presentations: “Bluetooth technology and hearing aids.” Bluetooth technology is a wireless protocol using low power radio signals to transfer files short distances at high speeds and create personal area networks. Dr. Amanda Picioli, Au.D., an audiologist at NTID, explains the use of Bluetooth to enhance modern hearing aid technology. Followed by “WebCapTel telephone service.” Sprint, in charge of the NY Relay Service, has rolled out a free new telephone service. It’s web-based captioning, running on any kind of telephone (cell phone, amplified phone, regular, landline or cordless), and it’s available wherever callers have access to both a working phone and the Internet. Meredith Low, a Relay Ambassador for the New York Relay Service, demonstrates and explains the service as well as the captioned telephone, “CapTel.” The 11 AM program is Audiolooped. To Your Health! is a health and wellness series geared toward active older adults, featuring health experts from the University of Rochester Medical Center. All lectures through November will be held at the Hahnemann Club, 301 Stoutenburgh Lane, The Highlands at Pittsford, off of Rt. 31 just east of the village of Pittsford.  Parking is conveniently located right outside the clubhouse along the street.  All seminars are free but registration is limited. Diabetes is the leading cause of blindness and kidney failure in the U.S. Robbins will list six health goals to lessen the chance of developing blindness, kidney failure, heart attack, and amputation.

Sleep and Sleep Disorders in the Elderly

October 23, 7 PM. “Discovering Deaf Worlds.” Christy Smith, who is deaf and a former contestant on CBS-TV’s “Survivor: The Amazon,” and David Justice, an American Sign Language/English interpreter and deaf community advocate, will be special guest presenters at Rochester School for the Deaf (RSD) for the school’s 16th annual Adventures in Education program. As co-founders of Discovering Deaf Worlds, an organization dedicated to promoting deaf awareness globally, Smith and Justice are currently wrapping up their first-ever international adventure which began in October 2007. Since that time, Smith and Justice have traveled extensively through New Zealand, Australia, Japan, China, Thailand, Cambodia, Nepal, and India. In major urban centers and rural communities they met with deaf community leaders, government officials, educators, and deaf and hard of hearing youth, adults, and their families. They will present their personal travelogue of encounters and experiences as they interacted with individuals with hearing loss in countries outside of the United States. Open to the public. This month we have an interesting topic that will really get the creative juices flowing and provide a great opportunity for everyone in our group to meet, network, and let their voices be heard for a worthwhile community project. We will be discussing/planning for Rochester 's first Urban Center for Sustainable Living! This topic has been on the drawing board of many groups around the city for some time and it is time to take action. We hope to have city officials, contractors, business owners, and the public alike at this meeting, so tell anyone that may be interested to bring their ideas and suggestions. We will have an initial powerpoint presentation on other sustainable community facilities similar to this one, then we will open the floor for an all-inclusive forum.
